Intro

Babe Ruth was the World's best baseball player. He played for the New York Yankees. He was an outfielder/pitcher/Batter. Babe Ruth has the third most home Runs.

Early Life

George Herman Ruth was born on February 6 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Ruth's parents are Big George and Kate. George's father, Big George owned a bar and his mother helped run the family business. Babe's hometown is where he was born. Babe Ruth was poor, a lot of kids died young. Only Mamie and Babe lived till adulthood. At six years old Babe was very naughty. It is hard to believe because he is six. He stole stuff from his dad's bar. He hated school so he wouldn't go. He played baseball on the streets. The boys called policeman coppers because their headbands were made of copper.

Coppers are Babe's rivals because they always try to make him go to school and behave. People yelled Babe and his naughty gang to get out of the road. The boys fired rotten eggs.

When Babe's parents asked him to go to school he would only do one thing. He would talk back to them of course. Babe sometimes knocked fruit from fruit stands. Babe actually wasn't a bad boy but he didn't think before he did. When Babe was 7 he stole a dollar from his dad to buy ice cream for all his friends. His father Big George spanked him. They couldn't keep him out of trouble. One day they stopped trying. Big George took Babe for a ride in a trolley car. Babe probably didn't know where they were going. They were going to St. Mary's Industrial School for boys, a place for troublemakers and orphans. St. Mary's was his new home.

At his first few days at St. Mary's Babe cried. He was scared and angry. There was a Watchman to keep an eye on the boys. The teachers woke the kids at 6am. After all the lessons the children played outside. Most of the kids liked Baseball. It was the most popular sport in America in those days.

All the kid's parents came to visit the kids but not Babe's parents even though they only lived 4 miles away. This made Babe sad. Brother Matthias was a teacher. Since so many kids loved baseball so it was easy to get a game going. The school only had gloves for righties so Babe caught the ball in his hand and threw it to the bases. They all did different rolls each day like field one, the next be catcher. This was good training. One day Babe was catching at home plate. He began making fun of the pitcher. Brother Matthias taught him a lesson. So he told him to try pitching and see if he could do better. Babe had not done pitching before and was afraid that he might embarrass himself. He did do. But from then on he mostly played pitcher. The kids called Brother Matthias the greatest person on earth or a father and when he was around they behaved. Brother Matthias started a league with over 40 teams made up of their best players at school. Babe was so good that when he was 8 he was playing with the 12 years old kids. After 12 years at St. Mary's Babe got his big break and left for good.

Middle Life

In the early 1914's Babe signed Jack Dunn's contract to play for the Baltimore Orioles. He was as excited as a little kid because he hadn't seen anything out of Baltimore before. He was a star pitcher on the team. Dunn offered him $600 a year to play on the school team. Babe was surprised because he didn't know pro players get paid. Also at St. Mary's noone would earn close to $600. "Yes" said Babe for the contract. It was his lucky day. A teammate told Babe to rest his pitching arm in the pouch that was above his bed while sleeping.

So Babe did. The next morning his arm was stiff. The teammates giggled like crazy. They couldn't stop grinning about how little he knew about the world. The thing that Babe loved the most was the cafeteria. One day at the cafeteria Babe ate 3 pancakes in a day. His teammates watched in amazement. They were even more amazed when at the field Babe hit a home run and it went passed the parking lots.

On July 9, 1914 Babe went to the Boston Red Sox. A lot of the Red Sox fans counted on Babe to score the runs and forts. Babe tried not to let all red Sox fans down. On July 11, 1914 Ruth met Helen Woodfort. Helen was Babe's first wife. In the 1914 World Series Babe's team, the Boston Red Sox won. In the 1914 Series Babe's team beat the Cleveland Nkabs. Babe Ruth was a huge hero in the Boston Red Sox. In 1920 Babe got traded from the Red Sox to the New York Yankees but the Red Sox Manager didn't agree with that. The Boston Red Sox hadn't won another World Series for 86 years. Today people think it is because they lost Babe.

Babe's first game was against the Philadelphia Athletics. However Babe's team, Yankees lost but Babe hit 2 home Runs. In 1923 The New York Yankees had won their first World Series. In the previous 2 years the New York Giants had beat the New York Yankees but Babe came back stronger. Later on Babe became the king of Baseball. In one of his final games he scored .172 not out. Noone had even hit half that total. In 1934 Babe retired from Baseball.

Late Life

There was a Yankees stadium where there was a party going on. Babe showed up even though he was sick and had throat cancer. Millions of kids were giving him letters. Babe Ruth died on August 16, 1948 from throat cancer. Babe made a difference in the world by hitting the third most home Runs. If Babe didn't achieve his goals we would never have an amazing star like him. That is what I admire about him. There will never be another Babe Ruth.
